The CAPC program is administered through the Quesnel Tillicum Society (Native Friendship Centre – Donelda Mitchell). Charlene Van Koughnett is the FASD (CAPC) Resource Worker for that area. She provides workshops and presentations, including storytelling with young children, integrated case management, and support and advocacy for parents and caregivers of children living with FASD. She also does significant work around raising awareness about FASD in the community. Charlene has also assisted in the development of a life skills program for individuals living with FASD called “Moving Forward.”

The Northern Family Health Society hosts the Community Action Program for Children program funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. The CAPC program offers individual and group supports for parents with children ages 0-6. Group sessions include Parenting 1,2,3,4; Prenatal Classes; Postpartum Depression Group; and Mothers for Recovery. We also work in partnership with community organizations such as Children First, Success by Six, and the Parent Support Services.
The CAPC program is also actively involved in delivering programs in the prevention of FASD and providing supports for individuals living with FASD.

The Nechako Valley
Community Services Society administers the FASD program in
Vanderhoof through Executive Director, Randene Wejr. Sandra Cleverly
is the local FASD (CAPC) worker. The FASD Program (CAPC) offers
ongoing support to caregivers of FASD Children. Sandra delivers
presentations to junior-high and high school classes, has performed
FASNET Assessments (a diagnostic screening tool) and offers a 12
week Parenting Support Program. This program has been successfully
presented in a variety of communities and on reserve. The recent
focus of the Vanderhoof CAPC program has been the development of a
community kitchen in partnership with Neighborlink, Public Health
and Mental Health. Sandra also facilitates the Roots of Empathy
program with a local Kindergarten class.

The CAPC Program in Fort St. James is administered by the Nechako Valley Community Services society in Vanderhoof. The new ED is Randene Wejr. Lori has been the FASD (CAPC) Worker since 1997. The Fort st. James site provides individual support for caregivers as well as community presentations. Lori conducts FASD educational sessions for grade 5 students and goes to the local highschool as much as possible. She consults with parents and professionals regarding FASD as needed and is working in partnership with with the Nakozdle Band, CNC, local School District, etc. to name a few. Lori is also a strong advocate for CDBC.

Randene Wejr, through Nechako Valley Community Services Society in Vanderhoof administers the FASD resource Program in Fraser Lake. Robin Hendriksen, a long standing resident of Fraser Lake is the CAPC FASD Worker. This CAPC program also serves the neighbouring communities of Endako and Fort Fraser as well as the First Nations communities of Stellat’en and Nadleh. The program provides advocacy and support to children 0-6 and families of those living with and affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs. As well, prevention and education session sare provided in area schools and upon request with in these communities. Services are provided from the Fraser Lake Community Health Centre. Stratgies, referrals, information and confidential support is provided to families, caregivers, teachers and other involved community professionals. In addition, the worker partners with other community agencies and services to provide such programs as You Make the difference, Rhyme Time, Family Drop In, Preschool Gym Time, Roots of Empathy and Active Parenting. Robin also provides FASNET Assessments as a step towards achieving diagnosis. Robin’s newest news for the fall is that she is partnering with Strong Start, a school, district run parent participation school readiness program. It will be held at Moose Mountain School for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. The facilitator is a certified Early Childhood Educator. The content is focused on 3 and 4 year olds, but all preschool aged children are welcome. Robins involvement will include referrals, early literacy activities, parenting groups and partnering in other activities. Robin is also The Key Point Person for Roots of Empathy for schools/ instructors in Vanderhoof, FSJ, Fort Fraser and Fraser Lake.
Rhyme Time has been a very successful aspect of the Fraser Lake Program for the past five years. The focus is on songs, rhymes and stories with the goal of improving speech, language, early literacy skills and brain development in preschool children. Weekly sessions are held at the Community Helath Centre, Mama Loves Me Daycare and the Nadleh and Stellat’en Head Start Programs. Other successful program activities include Active Parenting, Family Drop in, Preschool Gym Time and Roots of Empathy, which Robin offers to a Kindergarten class in Mouse Mountain School.
